The origins of poker as we know it today are uncertain, although the most widely accepted theory is that it comes from a mixture of several games. Among them the Persian as Nas, precursor of the French Poque, and the first Renaissance game. It began to become popular with the public in the 1970s, when the World Series of Poker began in the United States in casinos.
How to play Poker?
The objective in the game is, through the combination of the cards, to achieve a better hand than that of the rivals or the croupier to win the round. In poker, the game’s variants are practically endless, with a range of options depending on the style of player you are or what you prefer to try at that time. Something that does not change from one version to another is the card combinations, and their value. You can achieve victory with these cards, from lowest to highest value:
High card: You will beat your opponent if neither of you have a valid card combination and your highest card is higher than theirs.
Pairs: Two cards of the same value.
Double pairs: Combination of two pairs of cards.
Three of a kind: Three cards of the same rank.
Straight: Combination of five cards with consecutive values.
Flush: Five cards of the same suit or color.
Full House: Combination of a three of a kind and a pair.
Poker: Four cards of the same rank in hand.
Straight flush: Like the straight, but with the cards of the same color or suit.
Royal straight flush: Same as above but with cards from 10 to ace.
Poker online variations
The most common versions of this game are Texas Hold’em, Omaha Poker, and Classic Poker, although as we have said before there are many others. The normal procedure is, for Texas Hold’em, the distribution of two cards to each player that are kept covered. After the first round of betting, three cards are shown in the center of the table, valid for all players, which they will combine with those they have in their hands. Later there will be two more rounds of bets, the dealer discovering two new cards for the center of the table in each of them. At the end the players show their hands and the one with the most valuable combination wins.
There are other modalities in which the croupier directly deals five cards to each player, and this player must choose which cards to keep changing the rest again with the deck and find the best combination. In other versions, poker is combined with other games, such as Blackjack at Tequila Poker, or with a traditional Chinese game such as Pai Gow Poker. You also have video poker, a mix of poker and slots.
